My Personal Research Journey

For my research simulation I have chosen, how to get parents involved in their child's learning environment. I work in Head Start and a big part of my job is to get parents involved, so naturally I want to learn more. I am currently a teacher and have recently applied for the position of Disabilities/Mental Health Specialist. In previous courses and in my position I have learned how important parent involvement is so now I want to now how to effectively communicate with parents/grandparents/guardians. I know that sometimes it is hard to reach parents and not offend them.

I have found article on the subject but would love to have some input from my colleagues/friends. I would like to hear from some of you about personal experiences and if anyone would like to share any literature with me that would be just grand.

Resources that I have discovered so far in my quest:

  1. Catherine,
I have a hard time getting some parents involved. However it helps if families know that they can be involved without coming into the class. There is a variety of ways that families can volunteer or share their knowledge. Sometimes families need to know that they are involved in their child’s life and education they just do not know how. You also need to remember that in some cultures in school the teacher is in charged and at home it is the father, these families are harder to get involved. Good luck with your research and I look forward to learning more about your topic.

  2. I think parent involvement makes a huge difference in early education. When I worked with Even Start I taught parenting classes, did home visits, and ran family nights. The parents loved it and it made the program a collaboration between the early educators and families. Good luck on your topic and this term.

  3. Parent/guardian involvement is so important to a child’s success in school. However, parents/guardians are running in so many different directions it seems hard for them to do one more task. I think that opening the lines of communication and having all kinds of medium to do that is important, for example, blogs, emails, letters home, text messages, Facebook and more. Also I feel it is important to start slow, let them involved is easy tasks at first like bringing empty TP rolls for a craft or pictures of their family to put in the classroom. Earn their trust and don’t overwhelm them. Baby steps are good. Hope you have success in your parent involvement.

  4. Catherine,

I want to say the stigma on early childhood education is more prominent than ever. I cannot stand for parents to tell me that all I am doing is babysitting but then get upset because their child has not progressed enough for when it is time to go to kindergarten. I amke it a point to address each individual family when they first enter my room on the importance of the program and their role in their child's learning. I often say it is like anything else in the world You only get what ou put into it. If you want your child to be successful then your going to have care enough to do the best. Alot of my parents are young and you have to hold their hand through the process and teach them as well. i hope this helps and Good Luck!
