Perspectives on Diversity and Culture

What is your definition of culture?
·     Culture is people’s ideas and ways of learning
·         Culture is learned behaviors that teach us about our heritage
·         Culture is the way we walk, talk and live. It is what we are made up of, our race, religion and ethnic
  backgrounds.

What is your definition of diversity?
·         Diversity is having different cultures in the same area
·         Diversity is having many different types of things in a group
·         Diversity is how we are all different

Which aspects of culture and diversity that I have studied in this course are included in the answers I received—and what are some examples?
·         Surface culture is mentioned in the form of race and ethnicity
·         Family culture in the form of heritage, religion, the way we talk and live
·         Social identity is the form of how we think, learn, walk, talk and live.

Which aspects have been omitted—and what are some examples of such omission?
I don’t think any aspects were omitted.

In what ways has thinking about other people’s definitions of culture and diversity influenced my own thinking about these topics?
I have learned that culture is the way we eat, sleep, talk, worship, celebrate holidays and live (Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2012, p. 55). I have learned from asking the questions to my friends, colleagues and relatives that we all have the same general ideas about culture and diversity. In these past three weeks I have discovered that there is much more to culture and diversity than what we see on the surface. I know have a better understand of getting to know about how we are all different and I will be able to take this knowledge into my classroom and help my children understand that we are different and we can learn from each other.

  1. Hello Catherine,

It seems that diversity means different, and culture would be who we are. The people that I spoke to where totally unaware of surface culture. They did talk about social culture in a way, just not by name. When I talked to my friends about diversity and culture we realize that we have truly not given it any thought. This class has opened a topic of conversation among us.

  2. How can we ensure that all early childhood educators get a class like this? I agree that by taking this class it has opened my eyes to how we need to look deeper into culture and diversity and that we will also have a better understand of both of them.

  3. Catherine,

You are right; there is much more to culture and diversity than what we see on the surface. We need to dig more so we will learn more. As we learn more, we can be more compassionate, understanding professionals.

As we move through this class, we can take everything we learn and apply it to our classroom routines. It has surely been eye opening for me!!

  4. I was also surprised that people can define culture and diversity but it was a general type of answer. I now have a deeper understanding of culture, as I know there is more than what is on the surface. I also am left wondering how we educate the people we know or others in our profession about culture and diversity.
